Background of the Study
Youth migration has become a significant socio-economic issue in many rural areas, influencing agricultural productivity and community development. In Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria, the migration of young people from rural to urban areas has resulted in a demographic shift that affects the agricultural sector. This migration is driven by the search for better employment opportunities, education, and improved living standards (Obi, 2023). However, the departure of young, potentially productive individuals has led to a labor shortage in agriculture, negatively impacting crop production and overall productivity. Traditional farming practices, which rely on the involvement of the younger generation, are under threat as a result of this exodus (Amadi, 2024). While some initiatives aim to create rural employment opportunities, challenges persist due to limited resources and infrastructural deficits. This study seeks to assess the extent of youth migration and examine its impact on agricultural productivity in Ndokwa East. The research will explore the socio-economic factors influencing migration, analyze agricultural output trends, and propose strategies to retain youth in rural areas. Ultimately, enhancing youth retention is key to revitalizing rural agriculture.

Statement of the Problem
Youth migration from Ndokwa East has created a noticeable decline in the agricultural labor force, resulting in reduced crop yields and diminished productivity. The exodus of young individuals seeking urban opportunities has led to a shortage of skilled labor in the agricultural sector (Obi, 2023). Additionally, the migration has disrupted the transfer of innovative farming techniques and reduced the potential for agricultural modernization (Amadi, 2024). The resulting labor gap poses a serious challenge to the sustainability of rural agriculture and food security in the region. This study aims to investigate the effects of youth migration on agricultural productivity, identifying key factors driving migration and assessing their impact on farming outcomes. The findings will contribute to the development of strategies that encourage youth retention and improve agricultural practices in Ndokwa East.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the extent of youth migration from Ndokwa East.

  2. To evaluate the impact of youth migration on agricultural productivity.

  3. To propose measures to retain youth and enhance agricultural output.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the primary factors driving youth migration in Ndokwa East?

  2. How does youth migration affect agricultural productivity?

  3. What strategies can mitigate the negative effects of youth migration on agriculture?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Youth migration significantly reduces agricultural productivity.

  2. H2: Socio-economic factors are key drivers of youth migration.

  3. H3: Retention strategies can improve agricultural output.

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical impact of youth migration on rural agricultural productivity, providing insights into the challenges faced by the farming sector. The research offers practical recommendations for retaining youth and enhancing agricultural practices, which are essential for food security and rural development. Its findings will inform policymakers and stakeholders in developing targeted interventions that balance migration trends with sustainable agricultural growth (Obi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing youth migration and its effects on agricultural productivity in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria, focusing solely on migration-related agricultural impacts.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Youth Migration: The movement of young individuals from rural areas to urban centers.

  • Agricultural Productivity: The output and efficiency of agricultural production.

  • Rural Development: Economic and social progress in rural areas.
